CREW Careers 2011

CREW Chicago 2013 Industry Leadership Dinner

The 2011 CREW Careers program was a great success, enjoyed equally by the girls who participated and the CREW members who presented the program.  As in prior years, we partnered with the Off the Street Club (OTSC) in West Garfield Park.  Approximately 25 girls from OTSC, ranging from eighth graders to high school seniors, took part in the program which ran for four weekly sessions.

The first session was held at the downtown offices of Jones Day and began with a brief “Real Estate 101” to introduce the girls to some basic real estate concepts.  The girls were then split into teams and headed outdoors for a real estate “scavenger hunt” searching for different real estate examples and uses. Along the way, they were able to stop in various buildings and businesses to take mini tours or even get a snack, compliments of various CREW Chicago members.

CREW Chicago December 2012 ProgramFor the next two sessions, CREW members met with the girls at the OTSC Learning Center in West Garfield Park.  Again working in smaller groups, the girls were tasked with designing a model project and creating a charette of their design.  They were then given choices of different sites in various locations and were asked to select the one that was best suited for their particular project. These sessions culminated with the teams presenting their designs to the entire group and explaining their choice of sites. Their creative ideas and enthusiasm made it fun to watch.

On the last session, the girls were taken on a tour of the impressive Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts which was then still under construction on the campus of the University of Chicago in Hyde Park.  Donning pink hardhats (generously provided by Turner Construction Company), the girls were able to witness firsthand an active construction site. After the tour, the group enjoyed a pizza party in the construction trailer while hearing from several women who were personally involved in every stage of the Logan Center project. All in all, the program was an entertaining and interactive way to expose young women to possible careers they might never have otherwise considered.
