CREW Careers 2013: This Year’s Program

Crew Careers 2011We are currently gearing up for the 2013 program which will kick off on May 21. The mission of CREW Careers is to introduce teenage girls to various careers in the commercial real estate industry.

As was the case with the 2010 and 2011 programs, we will be partnering with the Off the Street Club (OTSC) in West Garfield Park and will be working with girls drawn from OTSC. The event will be conducted on successive Tuesday evenings from 5:30 to 7:30 PM at various locations; including Jones Day’s office in the Loop, at the OTSC Learning Center in West Garfield Park and at Harper Court in Hyde Park and will run for four weeks.

Transportation from downtown to the OTSC campus will be provided to all volunteers.  An OTSC bus will pick us up at a central location in the Loop at 4:45 p.m. on each of the scheduled dates and will drop us off afterward.

  • May 21- Real Estate “Scavenger Hunt” /Intro to Real Estate: In Session One of the program, we will take the girls on a downtown “scavenger hunt” to look for different types of commercial real estate buildings and uses.

  • May 28 - Project Design / Charette Creation: In Session Two, the girls will work on developing a project and will create a charrette of their design

  • June 4 - Project Presentations:Session Three will involve a mock city council or planning department session in which the girls will present their proposed project to try to get “approval”.

  • June 11 - Harper Court Field Trip & Wrap Party:The final session will be a tour of a real-world development project (Harper Court in Hyde Park) and a wrap party.

How Can You Help?

GET US IN THE DOOR – Help us make the real estate “scavenger hunt” a more interactive experience. The girls will be searching for various items in a prescribed area of the Loop.  (See map and list of items attached.)  If you have a connection with a building or business lying within the scavenger hunt area and can help get us in the door for a quick stop, it makes the outing that much more informative and fun!

VOLUNTEER TO BE A SESSION PRESENTER– Presenters will be asked to attend a specific session of the program depending on their particular discipline or interest.   (At least one member of the CREW Careers committee will also attend each session to moderate and provide continuity). All presenters will also be invited to attend the final field trip/wrap party session.  The committee will provide you with an outline of the basic topics you will need to discuss.  You will have the opportunity to work closely with other CREW members while planning your presentation and will experience the rewards of exposing young women to possible careers that may never have occurred to them.

DONATE – Cash donations of any amount to offset the costs of the program are always welcome. Donations of other items (such as company logo items) that can be included in “goody bags” for the program participants are also appreciated.  The exact number of participants has not yet been determined, but we anticipate that there will be approximately 20 – 30 girls in participating in the program.

About CREW Careers™: Building Opportunities is a hands-on “Real Estate 101” classroom program presented by CREW Foundation in conjunction with its Global Donor Partners, designed to introduce teenage girls to the many career opportunities available to them in the commercial real estate industry.
Local CREW Network chapters present an annual program as either a One-day or Multi-week program, using local real estate projects to illustrate the various career options available within commercial real estate and are led by a wide variety of local professional CREW members from all fields of the industry. These programs are delivered in cooperation with a local academic institution and/or not-for profit girls’ group.

CREW Foundation, founded in 1998, is the philanthropic arm of CREW Network. It supports programs that assist women and girls to achieve economic self-sufficiency and promotes the entry of more women into commercial real estate.

CREW Network exists to advance the success of women in commercial real estate and does so by looking outward to bring more women into the industry, showcasing member successes and serving as a resource to its members and the industry. It includes a well-educated and experienced group of nearly 7,000 members in 60 major markets across North America. CREW Network members represent all disciplines of commercial real estate, and includes every type of expert required to “get the deal done”.

CREW Careers™ programs directly support CREW Foundation’s envisioned future of achieving parity in opportunity, influence and power, as well as its mission to advance the success of women in commercial real estate.

  • Achieving parity: CREW Careers™ introduces teenage girls to careers in the commercial real estate industry.
  • Achieving diversity: CREW Careers™ is delivered to a diverse audience, thus laying the groundwork necessary
to increase gender and ethnic diversity within the commercial real estate industry.
  • Achieving success: CREW Network members serve as mentors to young girls, donating time and expertise to provide
each girl with encouragement and knowledge of the skills that she needs to ultimately achieve career success in our industry.

jonesdayA special thanks to Jones Day for helping to make last year's program possible.
