History of Chicago’s Zoning Code and Its Current ImplementationWho: CREW members and non-members What: Chicago is renowned for its distinctive skyline, Loop business district, and diverse neighborhoods. How the face of Chicago came to be is a story of enterprise, ingenuity, opportunity—and zoning. Presenters: Joseph P. Schwieterman, PH.D. DePaul University, Professor, Public Service and Director, The Chaddick Institute for Metropolitan Development As co-author of The Politics of Place: A History of Zoning in Chicago*, Professor Schwieterman has focused on the important, often surprising, role of zoning in shaping the “The City that Works.” Dr. Schweiterman will discuss the interplay among development, planning, and zoning in the growth of Chicago and comment on the bold visions compromised by political realities, battles between residents and developers, and occasional misfires from City Council and City Hall. Dr. Schweiterman’s book is the first book devoted exclusively to one city’s zoning ordinance, making it an important contribution to the study of planning and urban policy. Brendan Reilly, Alderman, 42nd Ward, City of Chicago The boundaries of Ald. Brendan Reilly’s 42nd ward include Chicago’s downtown business district as well as established and emerging neighborhoods. Roughly, the boundaries extend from Jackson on the south to North Avenue on the north, Lake Michigan on the east to DesPlaines Street on the west. Ald. Reilly will comment on the implementation of the zoning code to blend commercial and residential interests and needs.
